Methodology
What the words mean
- Reported
- A person or their trusted contact submitted information. It has not been checked by anyone.
- Under review
- An authorized organization is assessing the information.
- Verified
- The case met the verifying organization's criteria, confirmed by two different human reviewers.
- Located
- Contact was restored or the person was otherwise located.
- No recent check-in
- We have not heard from the person within the period they chose. This does not mean anything has happened to them.
- Unknown
- “Unknown” does not mean the person was forcibly recruited.
What is counted
- Registered cases: accounts that created a Case ID.
- Loss-of-contact reports: reports by a person or trusted contact that someone is missing or unreachable.
- Forced recruitment reports: reports of forced recruitment, threats of recruitment, arrest followed by recruitment, or being taken from home, work or school. Reports made on behalf of someone else are included. Reports are not verified findings.
- Forced recruitment verified: reports a team of human reviewers verified.
- Inactivity is never counted as a report of forced recruitment.
Privacy rules applied to every figure
- Groups with fewer than 10 cases are not published.
- Related figures may be hidden together so that a hidden number cannot be recovered by subtraction.
- Only precomputed totals and one-dimension breakdowns are published. Filters cannot be combined.
Limitations
- Reporting bias: only people who know about the app and can use it appear in the data.
- Communication restrictions: internet and phone shutdowns, and safety concerns, prevent reporting.
- Duplicate reports: several people may report the same person. Possible duplicates are flagged for human review and are not merged automatically.
- Delayed verification: verification takes time, so verified figures lag behind reports.
- Incomplete geographic coverage: some areas are covered far less than others.
This database does not represent every forced recruitment case in Myanmar, and it should not be used to estimate the total number of cases.
